Building Better Horses Starts Here
Behind Trig Horsemanship: Joel Gregory
I’m Joel Gregory, a professional horse trainer with a lifelong background in Western riding and competitive success in Cutting and Western performance. Horses have been part of my life from the beginning, and my foundation was built riding under the guidance of my father and working alongside some of the most respected trainers in the industry.
Over the years, I’ve earned titles including Youth World Champion and Open Non-Pro National Champion, achievements that reflect the standards I hold myself and my horses to. These experiences shaped a clear, structured training approach—one built on accuracy, timing, and developing horses that understand their work and respond with confidence.
My training career spans every stage of a horse’s development: from first handling and groundwork, to starting under saddle, developing correct foundations, and preparing horses for advanced work or competition. I’ve worked with a wide range of horses and riders, helping refine behaviour, build reliability, and support long-term progression.
In 2023, I was lucky enough to turn my passion into my profession and establish Trig Horsemanship in Taupō. The business has grown through strong word-of-mouth recommendations, consistent results, and trust built with horse owners across the North Island. I provide tailored training programs for horses of all types and stages—helping them develop clarity, confidence, and capability in their work.
Horses have shaped my life, and the most rewarding part of this job remains the same: bringing out the best in each horse while supporting owners to achieve their goals with clarity and confidence.
"Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. There’s something truly rewarding about building trust and understanding with each horse, watching them grow in confidence and ability. My passion lies in bringing out their best while helping owners achieve their goals."
